The Open Charge Alliance is a global group of public and private electric vehicle infrastructure leaders who are paving the way for industry-wide EV charging standardization. They’ve created two main software standards for EV charging: the Open Smart Charging Protocol (OSCP) and the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP). The latest version of OCPP, version 2.0.1, aims to solve charger uptime issues with crucial software functionalities for real-time monitoring, improved transaction handling, and driver support. OCPP 2.0.1-compliant software ensures compatibility between charging stations and the backend to streamline the charging and payment process. It also requires robust error detection and resolution mechanisms within the charging infrastructure to find and resolve issues faster. While there is industry support for OCPP 2.0.1, some charge point operators are still operating on software that meets the old OCPP 1.6 standard. There are clear benefits to upgrading, but it’s a major change that can require significant developer resources. There is another way: adopt and augment compliant open source software.
